Time Flies!! Dr. Holladay celebrates her 11th year

Dr. Theresa Bartos Holladay has offered board certified gynecologic and obstetrical services for eleven years. We have been in our new office for two years at 707 North Washington Avenue, Ludington, MI. Luanne Parks, FNP joins our practice this fall. Dr. Holladay has recently begun a clinic in Shelby, Michigan at the outpatient area in Hackley Lakeshore Hospital on 72 State Street in downtown Shelby. Our local communities have been growing and changing and we have adjusted with these changes. We offer evening and weekend appointments so women miss fewer hours at work and can get childcare easier to keep their appointments. Luanne Parks, Family Nurse Practioner, brings her family practice expertise to allow patients quick and easy access to our care. We want to offer our services 6 days weekly at times convenient for busy women. We offer lower cost procedures in our office to save medical costs for our patients. We coordinate care with your other doctors to provide safe and accurate information to your other providers and to assist you in keeping your health records organized. Dr. Holladay performs many procedures that are outpatient (same-day) and less invasive that used to require large incisions and long stays in the hospital and longer recovery times away from work. Endometrial ablation or placement of a progesterone device will help many women avoid needing a hysterectomy. Bladder repair surgeries with new materials and smaller incisions help women return to their normal activities quickly. Biofeedback and bladder retraining can help most women avoid surgery altogether. Diet, medication, and pelvic floor muscle training are effective pain and incontinence treatments. Healing Foods To Reduce The Risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Yummy!

I am so glad when we can recommend something simple and enjoyable that can make your life healthier! Researchers have concluded that daily ingestion of chocolate, almonds, wine, garlic, fruit and vegetables with 4 times weekly fish can reduce cardiovascular risks by 75% . To quote Oscar H. Franco in the article: “Finding happiness in a frugal, active lifestyle can spare us a future of pills and hypochondria.” (BMJ 2004; 329:1447-1450, 18 December, 2004, DOOI:10.1136/bmj.329.7480.1447) Hmmm, did they say CHOCOLATE, EVERY DAY? Yes they did, 100 grams is a handful of dark chocolate. WINE? Only 150 cc (1/2 glass) with a meal. More than 12 oz of wine daily raises the risk of breast disease. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES DAILY? 400 grams/ daily is about 5 servings. ALMONDS? DAILY? Yup, 68 grams a day. It would make sense to pack up a small baggie of chocolate chips, dried cherries and almonds for a daily afternoon treat or mix into yougurt for a yummy dessert!! Fish was recommended four times weekly 114 grams. GARLIC daily makes you 25 % less likely to have cardiovascular disease. I think that incorporating these foods into our routine family meal planning can easily improve everyone’s health! Eating food is preferable to taking pills or yucky supplements. The “poly-meal” is proposed by this article because it contains the folic acid, omega 3 fatty acids, minerals and vitamins that have been deemed “heart healthy”. This British Medical Journal article is often cited because it addresses some important public health concerns AND because they said CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU!!! Combining the “poly meal” daily with exercise and avoidance of saturated fats and processed foods will enhance your diet and your health!! Cheers!

Alternatives to Abdominal Hysterectomy

Dr. Holladay performs most hysterectomies vaginally. Laparoscopic surgery allows Dr. Holladay to use small abdominal incisions to complete a hysterectomy from small incisions in the vagina to remove the uterus ,cervix, and sometimes the ovaries and tubes. Most women go home the next day. Endometrial ablation allows Dr. Holladay to treat heavy bleeding with a same-day surgery that requires NO hospital stay!! Hysteroscopy allows Dr. Holladay to completely visualize the inside of the uterus to remove fibroids or polyps. Hysteroscopy is also done out-patient with NO hospital stay. The Mirena® progesterone device can be inserted in the uterus during an office visit or after a hysteroscopy to treat heavy periods, prevent uterine pathology and provide excellent birth control. Dr. Holladay enjoys providing women with choices in their treatment. Many women have avoided surgeries and procedures altogether by following her medical advice. In-office ultrasound helps to visualize the potential problems. Our web site, in office video, and computerized handouts are provided to allow patients to make their best gynecologic decisions!!

Bladder Surgery

Dr. Holladay has been performing incontinence surgery for 10 years. New techniques and surgical materials have simplified incontinence and vaginal repair. Dr. Holladay offers her patients vaginal sling with tissue from bovine collagen, synthetic mesh, or the patients’ own tissues. For patients unable to undergo anesthesia, injectable collagen and longer acting materials can be given during an out-patient cystoscopic procedure. It is important that women understand their bladder problem completely. Dr. Holladay performs in office bladder testing, ultrasound and biofeedback muscle testing/education as part of the evaluation of her patients. This complete evaluation and initial therapy keeps 80% of her patients dry!! Medical therapy and diet changes help many other women. When surgery is needed, Dr. Holladay’s patients are already prepared with information about their unique incontinence and bladder disorder. Patients have the best out comes when they are adequately informed and prepared for treatment.

You are not alone, talk with us about infertility concerns

“If I don’t get infertility therapy, then I won’t be disappointed every month when my menses arrives!” Dr. Holladay hears this from many patients who wait to discuss their desire for a pregnancy because they were frustrated with attempting and failing to get pregnant. Every woman deserves a chance at motherhood, if she desires a child. We work closely with our patients’ fertility issues. We can help with the grief of lost fertility, miscarriage, and fears about how conception sometimes doesn’t happen easily. Paula W. our MSW has assisted many of our patients with the feelings and fears associated with attempting pregnancy without success. Don’t wait to ask for help. Infertility needs medical attention. Both partners need a health evaluation to make sure medical problems aren’t present. Most healthy couples that successfully learn natural family planning can expect success within 2 years. ATTENTION!! Osteoporosis drug warnings

Some women are experiencing dental side effects from bisphosphonate drugs (Fosamax®, Actonel®, and Boniva® are oral bisphosphonates that help stop bone loss.) Osteonecrosis, or bone death, has been reported as a possible side effect of these medications. This effect can be diagnosed with xrays of the jaw and treatments can be complicated. More study needs to be made about osteonecrosis and how we can predict and prevent this from being an effect in our patients. Calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and estrogen supplementation are also helpful at slowing bone loss. Evista® is a special form of estrogen that may also reduce breast cancer risks while strengthening bone. Exercise, especially walking while doing weight bearing upper and lower body strengthening, helps stimulate bone growth. Adequate nutrition and exercise is always a good idea. Review your other treatment options carefully. Keep your dental visits up to date and discuss your concerns with your practioners.
